Last month I spent a week in Bangkok, Thailand training some local jewellers on the skills of fine polishing and perfecting the final finish. It was an interesting week for us all - having to use an interpreter to get across sometimes difficult instructions and terms, but it was a lot of fun as well. I enjoyed the local food, a Thai massage or two and traveling to and from work on a scooter. I may have taught the team there some new skills, but I learnt from them too. At times I marveled at their ingenuity - as they had created tools that they could not buy, and was amazed at their way of doing certain techniques - such as setting stones with a hammer and punch; and using a massive blow torch for fine soldering. I've learnt a few new tips and tricks too which I'm already starting to use in my work here.
